A pretty house
with a pretty fence
somewhere
in the country
I dreamed
my own
happily-ever-after
with you
To save it from
a slow death
I thrust into it
the knife
of reason
expecting it
to perish
bloodlessly
But it streaked
the sky
a brilliant red
a public admission
of failure
it seemed to me
that would play out
day after day
Now I look
for a world
where the sun
doesn’t shine
where the night
is dark enough
to drown
my nightmares
